Pacific Northwest Flooding Forces Thousands to Evacuate

Communities in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and western Canada are bracing for potentially life-threatening floods following days of intense rainfall that have caused rivers and tributaries to overflow.

The National Water Center reported on Thursday significant flooding along the Skagit and Snohomish rivers in Washington state, a situation expected to persist through Friday. Authorities are closely monitoring water levels and preparing for further rises.

In Canada, major highways leading to Vancouver have been shut down due to flooding, debris flows, and the elevated risk of avalanches, disrupting travel and commerce. The US-Canada Sumas Border Crossing is also closed to commercial traffic.

Evacuation orders are currently in effect for thousands of residents across both countries, as officials urge caution and preparedness. Another storm is forecast to hit the region on Sunday, raising concerns of worsening conditions.

Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency, estimating that up to 100,000 residents may be required to evacuate. “The flooding levels we’re looking at are potentially historic in nature, so we just want to emphasise how serious the situation is,” Governor Ferguson said at a news briefing.

He further explained to CNN on Thursday evening that the Skagit River “will be cresting tomorrow mid-morning… Again, that is expected to be a historic level on that river.” Governor Ferguson also warned that recovery from the storm could take “weeks” and appealed for federal assistance.

While an evacuation order was lifted in Orting, south of Seattle, Central Pierce Fire and Rescue cautioned residents to “remain vigilant into the evening,” reiterating the crucial safety message: “Remember, turn around don’t drown,” the department posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Over 30 highways are currently closed throughout Washington state, causing significant disruption for commuters, including those in the Seattle metropolitan area. The flooding has impacted all of western Washington and extended south along the Oregon coast.

Skagit County, a vital agricultural region north of Seattle, issued an immediate evacuation order for residents in floodplain areas. Approximately 75,000 people are expected to be evacuated from low-lying locations, according to officials.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warned on Thursday that the Skagit River would cause “severe near-record flooding from Rockport downstream through Sedro Woolley,” with “deep and swift flood waters” anticipated in the Cape Horn, Hamilton, and Thunderbird areas.

Rescue operations are underway across the state, utilizing inflatable boats and helicopters to reach those trapped by the rising waters. The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office reported rescuing “multiple” individuals by helicopter from homes in Sultan, about 40 miles northeast of Seattle.

The Snohomish River is also experiencing major flooding, with water levels “dancing with records” as they approach a local flood wall. King County and Snohomish County officials have cautioned that road closures could remain in effect for several days.

In Concrete, the water level upstream was lower than initially projected, but authorities maintain that record-breaking levels are still possible in other areas.

Across the border in British Columbia, Canada, multiple evacuation orders and flood warnings have been issued. City officials anticipate the Nooksack River will overflow its banks, though they expect the flooding to be less severe than the devastating event in 2021, which resulted in five fatalities and significant damage.

The entire region is experiencing the effects of an atmospheric river – a concentrated band of moisture in the atmosphere that can deliver torrential rainfall. This phenomenon is responsible for the current crisis.
