Ghana coach Otto Addo has emphasized the significance of the Black Stars’ opening 2026 World Cup qualifier against Panama, stating a strong start will be “very, very crucial” to their overall campaign.
The national team begins its journey to the tournament on June 17, 2026, in Toronto, Canada, with a clash against Panama. Following this, they are scheduled to face England in Boston and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27, 2026.
Speaking to the Ghana Football Association website, Addo cautioned against complacency, saying, “It’s very important that we don’t underrate any team. England are favourites in the group, but for me every game is special.”
He further elaborated on the psychological advantage a win against Panama could provide. “I’m hoping we have a good start against Panama – that will be very, very crucial. It will make the other games a little more relaxed and easier for the players psychologically,” he explained.
The coach also revealed plans to utilize the upcoming March international window for preparatory matches, aiming to fine-tune the team’s form. Addo expressed satisfaction with the progress of his youthful squad, highlighting their successful qualifying campaign.
“I think we did very well in the qualifiers. We just played one draw, and the rest we won, so we had quite a good year in 2025, after a bad year in 2024,” Addo stated. He also lauded the team spirit, noting the “good union among the players.”
