ACP Fiakpui Says Neglecting Dependents is a Crime

The Oti Regional Deputy Commander of the Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dennis Fiakpui, has warned that neglecting dependents is a criminal offence under Section 42 of Ghana’s Criminal Code (Act 29).

ACP Fiakpui issued this caution during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), an event supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

He explained that parents, guardians, and all caregivers have a legal obligation to provide for the basic needs of their dependents, including food, clothing, medical attention, and adequate shelter. Failure to do so, he emphasized, is punishable by law.

“It is a crime to wilfully neglect those you are responsible for,” ACP Fiakpui stated.

Beyond dependent care, the Deputy Commander encouraged both women and men to report instances of domestic violence. He stressed that violence, in any form and regardless of the gender of the perpetrator or victim, is unacceptable.

“We urge victims to come forward and report these cases to the Police so that justice can be served,” he added.

Mr. Eric Bungumi Agbo, the Krachi East Municipal Coordinating Director, also highlighted the widespread impact of GBV. He noted that it doesn’t only affect individuals directly involved but also has detrimental effects on the economy and the well-being of future generations.

“The Krachi East Municipality and the Oti Region as a whole deserve peace, prosperity, and progress, and this can only be achieved through justice and mutual respect for all, especially women,” Mr. Agbo said.
