The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is allegedly pursuing a plan to secure a parliamentary majority specifically to facilitate constitutional amendments, according to New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.
Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Tuesday, December 5, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah voiced concerns over what he described as a “pre-advertised agenda” to remove the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensah, and her deputies.
“There is a pre-advertised agenda to get rid of the EC commissioner and her deputies. It is being rolled out, the Constitution, and they will say it is procedure,” he stated, drawing parallels with previous controversial dismissals in the public sector.
He further asserted, “We are telling you if you still don’t believe it, that there is a pre-advertised agenda to ensure that there is an overwhelming majority in this chamber for the purpose of constitutional amendments.”
The allegations arise from a December 4th letter issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Mr Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, to Madam Jean Mensah, notifying her of a vacancy in the Kpandai constituency following a ruling by the Tamale High Court.
Minority MPs have vehemently criticized the Clerk’s letter, labeling it “out of place” and “unfortunate,” and arguing that it undermines the rule of law.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah emphasized the resolve of Minority MPs to resist any attempts to declare the Kpandai seat vacant, reminding Speaker Alban Bagbin of his prior ruling on the matter.
“What we can do is to stand on our feet and draw Mr Speaker’s attention to the fact that he should not buckle to any pressure being put on him to declare that seat vacant because he has already made that ruling. No amount of pressure should be brought on him to make that declaration,” he said.
