Sacked Coach Includes Onana in Cameroon's AFCON Team

Africa

A storm is brewing in Cameroonian football as Andre Onana’s inclusion in the Indomitable Lions’ 28-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) throws the team into further turmoil, despite the recent sacking of head coach Marc Brys.

Brys, who was officially relieved of his duties by the Samuel Eto’o-led Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) last week, is surprisingly maintaining he remains in charge. He has defiantly released his squad list, with Onana’s name featuring prominently, just before the Thursday deadline for submissions.

UK-based publication, The Sun, reports that the controversial squad announcement comes amid a bitter power struggle between Brys and Eto’o. The dispute initiated when the Sports Ministry appointed Brys over Eto’o’s objections, a decision that ultimately contributed to Cameroon missing out on qualification for the World Cup.

Fecafoot has accused Brys of “subterfuge” and “professional failure,” further alleging that he attempted to “incite” players against the federation. These accusations led to his formal dismissal.

The Federation also claims that Brys engaged in “active collaboration with unknown individuals within Fecafoot,” adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing saga. It remains unclear how this latest development will impact Cameroon’s preparation and performance at the AFCON tournament. Sources close to the team suggest a potential stand-off if the squad list isn’t approved by Fecafoot.

The entire situation is throwing Cameroon’s AFCON chances into doubt, with fans expressing their concerns over the instability rocking the national team. Many are hoping for a swift resolution to avoid further damage to the nation’s footballing reputation before the tournament commences.
