Fear now stalks the streets of Nkawkaw Zongo. A brazen shooting on Tuesday evening has left three dead and a community reeling. The Nkawkaw Zongo shooting has triggered an exodus of residents, all desperate for safety and demanding answers in the wake of the violence. The incident has cast a dark shadow over the town, leaving many questioning their security and future in the area.

This report aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the Nkawkaw Zongo shooting incident, detailing the victims, the community’s immediate response, and the measures initiated by authorities to address the crisis.

The tranquility of Nkawkaw Zongo was shattered on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at approximately 8:00 p.m. The location: a spot near a veterinary shop in close proximity to the Nkawkaw Zongo Barracks. Masked gunmen ambushed a group of men, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake.

The victims of the Nkawkaw Zongo shooting have been identified as Mohammed Wanto, 47; Abubakari Abdallah, 57; and Abubakar Mohammed, 56. All three were Fulani men. A child was also injured in the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment. Eyewitness accounts paint a grim picture of the ambush. The gunmen, their faces concealed, opened fire without warning, leaving the three men dead at the scene. A pursuit ensued, but the assailants managed to escape, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

The aftermath of the Nkawkaw Zongo shooting has been marked by widespread fear and displacement. Residents, gripped by terror, have begun leaving their homes, seeking refuge in safer locations. The mass departure underscores the deep-seated anxieties and concerns within the community.

The residents of Nkawkaw Zongo are urgently calling on the government to intervene. Their demands include either the relocation of the Fulani community to a more secure area or the implementation of enhanced security measures to protect them from further attacks. The community feels vulnerable and exposed, demanding immediate action to restore their sense of safety.

“We cannot live like this anymore,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal. “We need the government to protect us, or we will have no choice but to leave our homes for good.”

In response to the crisis, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Halidu Tamimu has assured the community that steps are being taken to improve security in the area. He emphasized collaboration with key stakeholders to implement effective measures.

“We are working closely with the Minister for Communication, Honourable Sam George, and the CEO of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), Richard Karikari Kevor, to install CCTV cameras along the Zongo–Akuajoo stretch to monitor activities and deter crime,” MCE Tamimu stated.

The Nkawkaw Central Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the shooting. While the perpetrators remain at large, the police have assured the public that they are actively pursuing several leads. The investigation aims to bring the culprits to justice and restore confidence in the community.

The Nkawkaw Zongo shooting raises questions about underlying tensions that may have contributed to the violence. Addressing these issues is crucial for fostering long-term peace and stability. Potential underlying tensions, perhaps related to land use, resource competition, or historical grievances, must be explored to inform preventative strategies.

Long-term solutions require a multi-faceted approach. Community dialogue, improved security, and social programs are essential to address the root causes of violence and promote peaceful coexistence. Such initiatives could include conflict resolution workshops, youth empowerment programs, and increased engagement between different ethnic and religious groups.

The Nkawkaw Zongo shooting has left a community scarred by violence and fear. The need for justice, reassurance, and lasting peace is paramount. Only through sustained efforts to address both the immediate security concerns and the underlying social and economic issues can Nkawkaw Zongo hope to heal and rebuild trust.
