Nigeria kicked off their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) campaign with a 2-1 victory over Tanzania in a rain-soaked match played in Fes, Morocco.
The Super Eagles drew first blood in the 36th minute courtesy of a well-placed header from defender Semi Ajayi, connecting with an inviting cross from Alex Iwobi. The goal sparked relief amongst the Nigerian supporters who had endured a tense opening half-hour.
Akor Adams had earlier opportunities to put Nigeria ahead, but Tanzanian goalkeeper Zuberi Foba proved equal to the task with two crucial saves within the first 12 minutes. Later in the first half, Samuel Chukwueze’s attempt was tipped over the bar by Foba, denying Nigeria a second.
Tanzania emerged with renewed vigour after the break, levelling the score in the 50th minute through Charles M’Mombwa, who side-footed home a delivery from Novatus Miroshi. However, their joy was short-lived.
Just two minutes later, Ademola Lookman, the former African Footballer of the Year, restored Nigeria’s lead with a stunning strike. He skillfully shifted the ball from right to left before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner.
The Super Eagles held on to secure the win, much to the delight of the 11,444 fans in attendance. Nigeria now turn their attention to their next Group C encounter against Tunisia on Saturday, also in Fes.
Tanzania, meanwhile, will face Uganda in an all-East African clash in Rabat. This is the East Africans’ continued search for a first-ever victory at the Afcon finals.
Nigeria are aiming for a fourth Afcon title, having last lifted the trophy in 2013. They were runners-up in the recent tournament held in the Ivory Coast. The team is driven by the “Naija 4 the Win” campaign launched by the Nigerian Football Federation.
Despite their Afcon ambitions, the Super Eagles are still reeling from their failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The team will be hoping to replicate their success from 1980, when they defeated Tanzania in their opening match before going on to win their first continental title.
