Thousands of crates of eggs had been sold by midday on Friday at the ongoing Multimedia Group X’mas Egg Market, the Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association (GAPFA) has confirmed.
The two-day market, a collaboration between The Multimedia Group Limited (MGL) and GAPFA, is being held at the Joy FM car park. It was established to tackle the challenges of egg glut faced by local poultry farmers and to provide consumers with affordable eggs and poultry.
Speaking to Joy Business, officials of GAPFA attributed the strong sales to the increased demand for protein during the Christmas season and the direct link the market provides between farmers and buyers. “The patronage has been very good, and it shows that people are looking for affordable protein sources, especially as Christmas approaches,” a GAPFA representative stated.
Consumers at the market expressed their delight with the initiative. “This is very timely, especially with the way things are going. Prices are high everywhere, so this is a big relief,” one shopper told Joy Business.
Another consumer noted the quality of the products, saying, “The eggs and chicken are fresh, and the prices are much better than what you find in the shops. I’m buying enough to last my family for a while.”
The X’mas Egg Market isn’t just benefiting consumers; it’s also offering crucial support to poultry farmers who have been struggling with oversupply, declining prices, and escalating production costs in recent months.
The market will continue tomorrow, and organisers anticipate even higher sales as more consumers seek to take advantage of the festive price reductions.
