MTN Ghana Hosts Digital Safety Debate in Damongo

MTN Ghana, in collaboration with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in the Savannah Region, has organized a debate competition between Yabum JHS and Jakpa JHS to mark the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

This year’s campaign is themed, “Unite to end digital violence against all women and girls.” The debate centered on the motion, “Teaching boys and girls the same thing about online respect and digital safety will prevent violence.”

Yabum JHS emerged victorious, scoring 84 points while arguing in favour of the motion. Jakpa JHS, who presented the opposing argument, closely followed with 74 points.

Judges lauded both teams for their thorough research, confidence, and effective rebuttals. “Our pupils have shown that they understand the realities of the digital world and the importance of equality,” one of the judges stated.

Outstanding debaters were recognized with awards, and the headmaster of Yabum JHS received a Samsung tablet for leading the winning school.

Following the competition, representatives from both schools appealed for better internet connectivity to enhance teaching and learning. “We need WiFi to help us learn better and explore ICT fully,” a contestant expressed on behalf of their peers.

Mr. Kofi Apeater Odum, Chairman of the programme and GES Director for North Gonja District, described the initiative as both timely and impactful. “When young people understand digital respect, they grow into responsible digital citizens,” he noted.

ASP Sarpong Kumankumah, the Savannah Regional DOVVSU Commander, encouraged students to seek assistance if they experience any form of abuse. “DOVVSU is your safe home. If anyone abuses you—online or offline—walk into our office without fear,” he assured.

Mr Ebenezer Terkpeh, Health and Education Portfolio Advisor at the MTN Ghana Foundation, highlighted MTN’s commitment to digital education. “MTN is building an AI and Robotics Centre at KNUST, and these two schools will be among the first in the region to visit and benefit when it is completed,” he revealed.

The event concluded with enthusiastic support for both schools, as organizers and community members celebrated the intelligence and poise of Damongo’s young debaters.
