A 34-year-old British mother-of-two, Sophie Hunt, died from multi-organ failure following cosmetic surgery in Turkey, an inquest has concluded.
Ms. Hunt, from Northampton, suffered three cardiac arrests on March 9, 2022, two days after undergoing a Brazilian butt-lift (BBL) and a tummy tuck at the private Nisantasi Hospital in Istanbul. She later died at Avrupa Safak Hospital, which has a specialist cardiac intensive care unit.
The family expressed serious concerns about Ms. Hunt’s fitness for the surgery. “If she hadn’t had the surgery, she would be alive still,” her sister, Aimee Hunt, told the Northampton Coroner’s Court.
According to her mother, Sandra Hunt, Sophie lost consciousness shortly after the procedure and exhibited swelling in her hands. Hospital paperwork revealed “some of her ECG readings indicate an abnormal heartbeat,” which doctors informed her was not healthy. “We believe she was not fit for the surgery,” Sandra Hunt stated.
The family is seeking further clarification regarding the complications that led to Ms. Hunt’s death. “They still haven’t stated what the complications were. It’s not really an answer. No one can really tell,” Aimee Hunt added, expressing the family’s desire for “more answers.”
Coroner Sophie Lomas acknowledged the limitations of the investigation, stating that due to Ms. Hunt’s death occurring in Turkey, her jurisdiction to fully investigate the hospital’s actions was restricted. “I have to reach the findings on the information I do have,” she explained.
The coroner concluded that “Sophie Hunt died due to complications of a surgical procedure carried out whilst abroad.”
A report from Turkey’s Council of Forensic Medicine indicated Ms. Hunt had no known pre-existing medical conditions. The report detailed that she underwent an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and liposuction on March 7, 2022, before experiencing a “sudden loss of consciousness.” The Turkish investigation determined her death resulted from the procedures and subsequent complications.
A post-mortem examination conducted in the UK by Professor Kevin West confirmed the death was due to surgical complications, but the “exact cause of cardiopulmonary arrest is unclear.”
Aimee Hunt revealed she had voiced concerns about her sister travelling abroad for such a significant surgery, stating, “it seemed like a big surgery to have.” She fondly remembered her sister as “outgoing, funny, fun to be around, caring, kind and a brilliant mum.”
