The Minority Caucus in Parliament is vowing to sustain pressure on the House until a directive declaring the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant is officially withdrawn.
Old Tafo MP, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, voiced the Minority’s discontent, expressing shock at what he termed a sudden change of heart by the Speaker of Parliament. He argued that instructing the Clerk to inform the Electoral Commission (EC) directly contradicts a prior ruling on the same matter.
“There will be continuous and lawful resistance throughout the week,” Mr. Assafuah stated. “We believe in constitutional supremacy and democratic governance. So it is surprising that the Speaker would direct the Clerk to write to the EC when it clearly conflicts with his earlier ruling. The Minority will continue this resistance for a week or two if necessary, until our concerns are heard. We will not cooperate with government business under these circumstances.”
Prior to the Speaker’s decision, the Minority had requested an adjournment following a lengthy debate on the issue.
Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, had firmly insisted that no government business would proceed until the Kpandai matter was resolved.
However, the Speaker called for a voice vote, which allowed parliamentary proceedings to continue. This prompted strong protests and repeated disruptions from the Minority MPs who attempted to halt business in the House.
