Venezuelan Opposition Leader Emerges from Hiding

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado made a surprise appearance in Oslo, Norway, on Wednesday, waving to supporters from the balcony of the Grand Hotel just hours after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

Machado, who has been in hiding for months and is subject to a travel ban, undertook a covert journey to accept the prestigious award. She has largely remained out of public view since Venezuela’s disputed presidential election in 2024, with her last public appearance being in January.

Addressing a jubilant crowd gathered below, Machado placed her hand over her heart and sang along with her supporters before descending to greet them personally. At one point, she even climbed over metal barricades to connect with the cheering throng.

Earlier in the day, Machado’s daughter, Ana Corina Sosa, accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on her mother’s behalf. The Nobel Institute recognized Machado for “her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy” in Venezuela.

The appearance followed speculation about whether Machado would be able to travel to Norway for the ceremony. The Nobel committee had previously shared audio of Machado stating, “I will be in Oslo, I am on my way.”

Following the award, Machado publicly praised US President Donald Trump, who has openly expressed his own desire for a Nobel Peace Prize. This praise comes amidst ongoing military tensions between the US and Venezuela.

President Trump recently announced that the US military had seized an oil tanker off the Venezuelan coast. His administration alleges the vessel was violating sanctions and involved in an “illicit oil shipping network supporting foreign terrorist organisations”.

The Venezuelan government has vehemently condemned the seizure, accusing the US of theft and piracy. The situation remains tense as both nations maintain their positions.
