The urgency of malaria elimination in Africa is clear. Achieving this goal would not only save lives but also unlock significant economic potential, estimated at a $126.9 billion boost to the continent’s GDP. Recognizing this, leaders from across sectors convened at the Africa CEO Forum to discuss innovative strategies for accelerating progress. On the sidelines of the Forum, Speak Up Africa and its partners launched the Francophone chapter of the Change the Story campaign and released a pivotal report titled, *Change the Story, Save Lives: The Private Sector’s Role in Ending Malaria.*

This article explores the crucial role that private sector engagement plays in mobilizing resources and driving innovation to accelerate **malaria elimination** across Africa. By examining the key recommendations from the *Change the Story, Save Lives* report and highlighting successful public-private partnerships, we will demonstrate how businesses can contribute to both public health and economic growth through strategic investments in **malaria elimination** efforts.

The private sector’s involvement is not just a matter of corporate social responsibility; it is a fundamental component of achieving a **malaria**-free Africa. Their resources, expertise, and networks are essential to overcoming the challenges that have hindered progress to date.

The potential for the private sector to rewrite the narrative of malaria in Africa is immense. To truly understand how, we must first look at the current situation and consider the specific recommendations put forward by leading organizations.

Malaria continues to cast a long shadow over Africa, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. Women and girls bear a significant burden, not only in terms of health but also in caregiving responsibilities and economic productivity. As Yacine Djibo, Executive Director of Speak Up Africa, has noted, this demographic is often underrepresented in decision-making processes related to health.

The *Change the Story, Save Lives* report outlines concrete steps that the private sector can take to make a tangible impact. These include providing direct or in-kind support to national **malaria control** programs, channeling resources to the Global Fund’s 8th Replenishment, joining End Malaria Councils, and investing in the Voix EssentiELLEs Fund. These are not just suggestions, but actionable strategies that can be integrated into existing business models.

Joy Phumaphi, Executive Secretary of the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA), emphasizes the critical role of the private sector. “The private sector is a vital partner in ending malaria,” she states. “We need bold action and increased investment to achieve our goals, and the private sector has the resources and expertise to make a significant contribution.” The urgency of her statement resonates with the growing recognition that **malaria control** requires a multi-faceted approach, where businesses are not merely donors, but active participants.

The Voix EssentiELLEs Fund represents a targeted approach to addressing the gendered dimensions of malaria. With a goal of mobilizing $4 million by 2030, the fund focuses on providing flexible funding for women and girls, supporting regional advocacy, and empowering women-led organizations working on the front lines of the fight against malaria. It’s a strategic investment in solutions that are tailored to the specific needs of the communities most affected.

The question then becomes: why should businesses prioritize investments in **malaria elimination**? The answer lies in the significant economic benefits that a malaria-free Africa can unlock.

The economic impact of malaria is substantial, acting as a major barrier to growth and development. However, a continent free from malaria’s grip would experience a dramatic surge in economic activity. Studies indicate that a 90% reduction in malaria cases by 2030 could boost Africa’s GDP by an impressive $126.9 billion.

Pierre N’gou Dimba, Minister of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage of CĂ´te d’Ivoire, highlights the direct stake that the private sector has in this fight. “The private sector has a direct stake in ensuring healthy communities,” he explains. “Healthy communities are more productive, more resilient, and ultimately, more profitable. Investing in malaria elimination is not just good for public health; it’s good for business.” The interconnection between health and economic prosperity is undeniable, and businesses are increasingly recognizing this link.

The return on investment in **malaria control** is also highly compelling. For every $1 invested in malaria interventions, there is a potential return of up to $60 in economic benefits, according to Yacine Djibo. This demonstrates that **malaria**-free communities are not only healthier but also more resilient, productive, and profitable, creating a virtuous cycle of development.

To illustrate the power of collaboration, the partnership between Speak Up Africa and Canal+ Côte d’Ivoire serves as a compelling case study.

Through a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Malaria Control Program, Speak Up Africa and Canal+ CĂ´te d’Ivoire have forged a successful public-private partnership. This collaboration has resulted in $1.5 million in airtime and in-kind support from Canal+ Group, leveraging the media company’s extensive platform to raise awareness and promote prevention strategies.

Adama KonĂ©, Managing Director of Canal+ CĂ´te d’Ivoire, emphasizes the company’s commitment. “We are proud to partner with Speak Up Africa in the fight against malaria,” she says. “Through our platform, we can drive awareness and promote behaviors that will help us end malaria for good.” This partnership exemplifies how businesses can leverage their core competencies to contribute to public health goals.

So, how can the private sector actively get involved in this crucial endeavor? There are several immediate steps businesses can take.

Businesses can provide direct or in-kind support to national malaria control efforts, channeling resources into the Global Fund’s 8th Replenishment, joining End Malaria Councils, and investing in the Voix EssentiELLEs Fund. By exploring partnership opportunities with organizations like Speak Up Africa and the RBM Partnership, businesses can find impactful ways to contribute to the fight against malaria.

In conclusion, the private sector has a pivotal role to play in **malaria elimination in Africa**. By mobilizing resources, driving innovation, and forging strategic partnerships, businesses can contribute to both public health and economic growth. A **malaria**-free Africa is not just a dream; it’s an achievable goal that requires urgent action and sustained collaboration. The economic and social benefits are immense, and the return on investment is compelling.

As Dr. Michael Adekunle Charles, CEO of the RBM Partnership to End Malaria, so eloquently put it, “This is your moment to co-invest for impact, because when Africa’s private sector leads, the world pays attention.” It is time for businesses to seize this moment and become champions of a healthier, more prosperous Africa.
