President John Dramani Mahama has passionately called for a unified front among the African diaspora, urging them to actively dismantle colonial mindsets and reclaim their power.
Addressing attendees at the Diaspora Summit 2025 held at the Accra International Conference Centre, the former President argued that a strategic reversal of historical oppression is crucial for the progress of people of African descent worldwide.
He challenged diasporans and stakeholders to critically examine and deconstruct harmful narratives that have historically undermined their collective strength. “Anything in this life, one strength of his power will no longer work. And that is true of slaves. It is true of stories, especially ones that are complete fabrications,” he stated, emphasizing the need to move beyond reliance on outdated systems and false historical accounts.
President Mahama issued a bold call for strategic reappropriation, stating, “Let’s take the narrative of those who oppressed us and work it. In fact, let’s take their entire modus operandi, flip it and reverse it.”
The core of his message centered on surpassing those who historically sought to divide and conquer. He implored the gathering to prioritize unity, saying, “So I urge you, my brothers and sisters, let’s be more intentional about our unity than they were about our division.”
The President’s remarks are expected to spark further discussion on the role of the diaspora in shaping Africa’s future and addressing the lingering effects of colonialism.
