President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Abidjan on Monday, December 8, after flying from Doha, to attend the swearing‑in ceremony of Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara for his fourth term.
A statement issued by Jubilee House said the Ghanaian president is expected to return home later this morning, following the ceremony.
According to Côte d’Ivoire’s Independent Electoral Commission, the 83‑year‑old incumbent secured re‑election with 89.77 per cent of the votes cast, confirming a fourth term in office.
Former Commerce Minister Jean‑Louis Billon, who previously congratulated Ouattara, garnered 3.09 per cent, while former First Lady Simone Gbagbo received 2.42 per cent, the commission’s president Ibrahime Coulibaly‑Kuibiert announced on state television.
“We are pleased to witness the peaceful transition in Côte d’Ivoire,” a spokesperson at Jubilee House said, adding that the event underscores the strong diplomatic ties between Ghana and its neighbour.
The ceremony, held at the Presidential Palace in Abidjan, comes as Ghana‑Ivory Coast cooperation deepens on trade, security and regional integration, areas that Mahama is expected to discuss during his brief visit.
Mahama is slated to depart for Accra after the oath‑taking, where he will brief the media on the outcomes of the trip and any bilateral agreements reached.
