Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest film, One Battle After Another, is currently leading the pack as Hollywood gears up for award season, securing nine nominations for this year’s Golden Globes, announced on Monday.
The movie, a gripping tale of the kidnapping of a former revolutionary’s daughter, has been nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. DiCaprio himself is in contention for an acting award, alongside co-stars Sean Penn, Teyana Taylor, Benicio Del Toro, and Chase Infiniti.
Close on its heels is the multi-language family drama, Sentimental Value, with eight nominations. Other actors vying for Golden Globe recognition include Dwayne Johnson, Timothée Chalamet, and Wicked: For Good stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
Despite its considerable box office success, the Wicked sequel surprisingly missed out on a Best Film nomination.
The Golden Globe winners will be revealed at a ceremony in Los Angeles on January 11th, a crucial milestone in the lead-up to the prestigious Oscars in March.
Both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are hoping to add to their accolades with wins at the Globes.
Also nominated are an adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel Hamnet, the vampire drama Sinners, and Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein. Irish actors Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley received nominations for their performances in Hamnet, as expected.
Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of table tennis player Marty Mauser in the sports biopic Marty Supreme also earned him a nomination. Veteran actor George Clooney received his 14th Golden Globe nomination for his leading role in Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, a film exploring the life choices of an ageing Hollywood actor, with co-star Adam Sandler also nominated in a supporting role.
Emma Stone is being recognised for her work in the conspiracy theory black comedy Bugonia, which garnered three nominations, including one for her co-star Jesse Plemons.
This year boasts a strong showing from international films. Norway’s Sentimental Value is joined by Iranian director Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just An Accident, a revenge story set against a backdrop of political imprisonment. The Palme d’Or winner has four nominations, while The Secret Agent and No Other Choice each have three.
Key Film Nomination Counts:
The Golden Globes also celebrate television, with British drama Adolescence receiving four acting nominations for Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, Erin Doherty, and Ashley Walters, as well as a nomination for Best Limited Series.
The White Lotus leads the TV nominations with six, including Best Television Series – Drama, and acting nods for Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, and Britain’s Aimee Lee Wood. Emmy winner The Pitt is also in the running, facing competition from The Diplomat, Pluribus, Severance, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus for the TV drama award.
Snubs and Surprises:
Wicked: For Good’s omission from the Best Musical/Comedy Film category was a notable surprise, though it remains on the shortlist for the new Box Office Achievement award. This award will celebrate the year’s most commercially successful cinema releases, including Avatar: Fire and Ash, F1, KPop Demon Hunters, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Sinners, Weapons, and Zootopia 2.
Emily Blunt’s nomination for her role in The Smashing Machine alongside Dwayne Johnson was a surprise, as was the Best Actress nomination for indie film star Eva Victor for Sorry, Baby, a film she also wrote and directed.
Chloe Zhao, director of Hamnet, joins an exclusive group of female directors – Barbra Streisand, Jane Campion, and Kathryn Bigelow – to have earned two Golden Globe nominations. Amanda Seyfried, Jacob Elordi, and Jeremy Allen White have all secured double acting nominations this year.
Seyfried is recognised for her work in the TV series Long Bright River and the film The Testament of Ann Lee. Saltburn star Elordi is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Frankenstein and Best Actor in a Limited TV Series for The Narrow Road to the Deep North. White’s portrayal of rock legend Bruce Springsteen in the biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere and his performance in the hit show The Bear have also earned him nominations.
Nikki Glaser will host the Golden Globes for a second consecutive year. The Best Song category includes hopefuls like “Dream as One” from Avatar: Fire and Ash and the pop hit “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters, which is also nominated for Best Animated Film. Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood is up for Best Original Score for One Battle After Another.
