A private legal practitioner, Kwesi Botchway Jnr, has formally requested an update from the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice regarding investigations into alleged illegal mining activities.
In a letter dated December 17, 2025, Mr. Botchway sought clarity on the progress of the probes, whether any interim findings have been submitted, and anticipated completion timelines.
This request stems from a public directive issued on July 15, 2025, by the Attorney-General, instructing the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate suspected illegal mining across the country. The directive, based on EOCO’s powers under the EOCO Act, 2010 (Act 804), also mandated the interrogation of persons named in credible reports – notably Yakubu Abanga and Joseph Yamin.
Mr. Abanga is the National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), while Mr. Yamin serves as the party’s National Organiser.
The investigations are also expected to delve into issues raised in the highly publicized Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng report concerning illegal mining and its environmental consequences.
Mr. Botchway explained that growing public concern, fueled by media reports and intelligence, prompted his inquiry into the involvement of some citizens in unauthorized mining operations. “These activities not only flout our mining regulations but also gravely endanger our water bodies, forest reserves, and local livelihoods,” he said.
He further emphasized that illegal mining continues to significantly threaten Ghana’s natural resources and the livelihoods of its people, thus highlighting the crucial need for transparency and accountability. “This request is made in good faith and in the interest of transparency, public accountability, and strengthening public confidence in the national fight against illegal mining,” Mr. Botchway stated.
The Attorney-General’s Office has yet to issue a public response to the lawyer’s request, leaving the public awaiting further information on this sensitive matter.
