Kwesi Botchway Jnr Demands Update on Galamsey Probe

Politics

A private legal practitioner is demanding an update from the Attorney-General (A-G) on investigations into alleged illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.

In a letter dated December 17, 2025, Mr. Botchway explained his request stems from significant public interest and the damaging impact galamsey has on the nation. He described the petition to the A-G as a call for clarity regarding the ongoing probe.

The lawyer’s request builds upon a directive issued by the Attorney-General on July 15, 2025, instructing the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate suspected illegal mining operations across the country.

Mr. Botchway stated the directive specifically asked EOCO to invite individuals, including Yakubu Abanga and Joseph Yamin, for questioning, and to examine matters raised in the Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng report.

He reminded the A-G that EOCO’s investigations fall under its mandate as established by the Economic and Organised Crime Office Act, 2010 (Act 804), and are part of the government’s commitment to tackle galamsey.

Mr. Botchway requested information on “the current progress of the investigations, any interim findings EOCO has submitted to your Office, and the expected timelines for the completion of the investigations.”

Quoting the Attorney-General’s initial directive, he highlighted that the probe was “borne out of growing public concern, corroborated by media reports and intelligence, regarding the involvement of some citizens in unauthorised mining operations… in blatant contravention of the Minerals and Mining Act.”

Mr. Botchway emphasized the grave dangers posed by galamsey, noting it “gravely endanger[s] our water bodies, forest reserves, and local livelihoods.” He added that his request was made “in good faith and in the interest of transparency, public accountability, and strengthening public confidence” in efforts to combat the illegal practice.
