Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu: Mahama Should Have Discussed OSP Bill Privately

Politics

Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has voiced his disapproval of President John Dramani Mahama’s public call for Parliament to withdraw the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) Amendment Bill.

In an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, Mr. Mensah-Bonsu argued that the President should have first raised any concerns about the bill directly with the Majority Leader, rather than making a public statement.

“If the President had any indication or issues about the bill, he ought to have engaged the Majority Leader privately, rather than making it public,” he stressed.

He explained that the President and the Majority Leader maintain a close working relationship, particularly regarding the steering of government business in Parliament. Therefore, any presidential reservations about the bill should have been communicated internally, he added.

According to the former Majority Leader, the OSP bill originated from the Presidency itself, making private consultation all the more vital. He further pointed out that even after potential passage by Parliament, the President’s assent would still be required for the bill to become law.

“This is because once Parliament passes the bill, it will still require the President’s assent,” Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated.
