Former President John Agyekum Kufuor on Thursday categorically denied ever backing Alan Kyerematen against Nana Akufo‑Addo for the NPP 2008 presidential ticket, calling the long‑standing rumour “misleading and unfair”.
Speaking on The Delay Show, Kufuor stressed he never supplied support or encouragement to Kyerematen to defeat Akufo‑Addo, emphasizing his neutrality in internal party contests. “I never supported him against anybody,” he said, adding that he gave no assistance to any candidate.
The former president recalled that after the NPP’s 2000 victory he even offered Kyerematen a ministerial position, which Kyerematen declined. “When I contacted him to make him a minister, he turned down the offer,” Kufuor disclosed, underscoring that no sabotage occurred.
Kufuor also used the interview to criticise the Akufo‑Addo administration for policy decisions he believes contributed to the party’s 2024 loss. “The Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, the PDS controversy and the National Cathedral project eroded public trust,” he warned.
He noted that while the government started well, choices made after the COVID‑19 pandemic raised serious concerns among voters, marking a sharp departure from the momentum built in 2016 when the party campaigned on the successes of his own administration.
The clarification comes as the NPP wrestles with renewed internal debates following its defeat. Kufuor’s remarks are likely to influence discussions on party unity and future strategy.
