Kpandai Chiefs Call on Mahama to Resolve Election Dispute

Politics

Chiefs in the Kpandai District of the Oti Region have vehemently rejected a Tamale High Court order for a rerun of the parliamentary election, expressing deep concerns about the potential for unrest and disruption of long-held community peace.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional leaders, Nana Nkpajator Nkpawiase II, Chief of Blajai, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene in the matter, urging a reconsideration of the court’s directive.

The High Court’s decision nullified the election results which saw Matthew Nyindam of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) declared winner with 27,947 votes. The court subsequently ordered the Electoral Commission to organize a fresh election within 30 days.

However, the chiefs maintain that the initial election was conducted fairly and that Mr. Nyindam legitimately earned the mandate to represent the people of Kpandai in Parliament. They affirmed their acceptance of the 2024 polls that brought President Mahama to power, alongside the election of their MP.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the chiefs warned that a rerun could ignite tensions and destabilize the district, which has enjoyed over 33 years of relative peace and harmony. They emphasized the importance of preserving this stability for the benefit of all residents.

Nana Nkpawiase and his colleagues further urged Daniel Nsala Wakpal, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, to exercise restraint and channel his efforts towards the 2028 elections, should his commitment lie with the progress of the Kpandai District.

“The community’s priority is peace and stability, and we will not stand by and allow any actions that threaten this,” the chiefs declared, underscoring their resolve to safeguard the well-being of their constituents.
