KIC School Farm Competition Grows from Local Roots to National Phenomenon

Education

What began as a simple learning initiative has blossomed into a nationwide movement, transforming school farms into engines of sustainability and economic empowerment. The KIC School Farm Competition is gaining national recognition for its impact on students, schools, and communities across Ghana.

Initially inherited from the Blue Skies Foundation, the KIC competition has expanded significantly, reaching more schools and reshaping perceptions about agriculture. It’s no longer just about teaching students how to farm; it’s about demonstrating the real-world benefits of agriculture.

Schools participating in the competition are now utilizing their farms to support canteens with fresh produce, generate income for vital campus renovations, and even acquire much-needed Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment. The initiative is also inspiring a new generation to consider careers in agriculture.

“We are seeing students transfer the knowledge they gain on these farms to their families and communities, strengthening climate-smart farming practices beyond the classroom,” a KIC representative stated.

The impact of the KIC School Farm Competition was formally acknowledged at the 2025 National Farmers’ Day Celebration, a testament to its consistency and relevance. President John Mahama has also encouraged all schools to adopt the KIC model, recognizing its potential to enhance food security.

“KIC stands ready to work with government and partners who believe in this vision, because food security is essential for national sovereignty, especially in the era of climate change,” KIC affirmed.
