KATH CEO Seeks Faster Completion of Maternity Block

The Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, has appealed to the government to expedite work on the long-stalled Maternity Block, emphasizing its urgent need to alleviate pressure on the hospital’s already stretched resources.

Speaking in Kumasi, Dr. Baidoo acknowledged the project’s inclusion in the 2026 national budget as a positive step, but cautioned that consistent commitment is vital for its timely completion. He warned that the current infrastructure is struggling to cope with the increasing number of patients, particularly those seeking maternal and child healthcare.

The Maternity and Children’s Block has become notorious as one of Ghana’s most protracted health infrastructure projects. Originally conceived during the era of General Acheampong, the initial structure remained abandoned for decades before being demolished after structural integrity assessments deemed it unsafe.

In February 2021, a new contract was awarded to Brazilian firm Contracta for the construction of a modern 507-bed facility. However, progress has stalled since the anticipated completion date of May 2024, leaving the Ashanti Region’s primary referral centre facing a critical capacity shortfall.

Upon completion, the five-storey block will boast state-of-the-art theatres and specialized wards, including units dedicated to paediatric neurology, haematology, cardio-respiratory care, infectious diseases, a mother and baby unit, and paediatric renal care. Hospital authorities envision the facility as a comprehensive, one-stop centre for the holistic care of mothers, newborns, and children.

Dr. Baidoo also voiced concerns over the perceived concentration of major health investments in Accra, while regional hospitals like KATH continue to grapple with significant strain. He expressed optimism that increased media attention and stakeholder support could reignite focus on stalled health projects within Kumasi.

KATH’s Director of Administration, Fred Effah-Yeboah, conveyed management’s confidence that the maternity block, alongside other crucial infrastructure projects, will be finished and inaugurated as part of the hospital’s 70th-anniversary celebrations. He disclosed that a series of events are planned to commemorate the milestone, underscoring Komfo Anokye’s pivotal role as a key referral centre for the northern sector of the country.
