US Judge Orders Release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from ICE Custody

International

A US judge has ordered the immediate release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from immigration custody. The ruling comes after Mr. Garcia was mistakenly deported to El Salvador in March and subsequently brought back to the United States to face criminal charges.

According to the judge’s order, Mr. Abrego Garcia was re-detained upon his return from El Salvador, despite the initial deportation being acknowledged as an error by the government.

The incident saw Mr. Garcia sent to a prison in El Salvador earlier this year. Upon admitting the mistake, the US government returned him to face charges related to human smuggling, where he has remained in custody.

The Trump administration alleges that Mr. Abrego Garcia is a member of the MS-13 gang, a claim he vehemently denies. The case has drawn scrutiny over immigration procedures and the rights of detainees.

This development follows reports that the US government had previously sought to deport Mr. Abrego Garcia to Uganda. The judge’s decision underscores concerns about the legality of his continued detention.
