Arthur Kennedy Reflects on President Kufuor's Legacy

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor is being celebrated for his significant contributions to Ghana, Africa, and the world as he marks another year of his life.

Writing on December 8th, 2025, Arthur Kobina Kennedy recounts his admiration for President Kufuor, noting his exceptional academic record at Prempeh College, where he “picked up virtually every prize in sight,” according to his biography.

Mr. Kennedy highlights President Kufuor’s early entry into politics, serving under both the Busia and Rawlings administrations. However, he emphasizes that the 1996 and 1998 campaigns were pivotal in Kufuor’s journey to the Presidency.

Despite facing resource constraints, Kufuor’s success was attributed to his relentless work ethic and strong interpersonal skills. “He was under-resourced but he made up for his lack of resources with hard work and personal relations,” Kennedy observed.

The support from the Northern regions was particularly crucial, with residents recalling Kufuor’s personal visits and engagement during his primary campaigns. Kennedy shared his own experience from the 2007 campaign, stating that he witnessed firsthand how Northerners cherished memories of Kufuor’s humble interactions, “showing me the beds or cots he slept on and recounting stories of midnight knocks on doors by Kufuor.”

President Kufuor’s leadership style was characterized by humility and inclusivity. “A humble Ashanti!” Kennedy exclaimed, recalling Kufuor’s belief that “Every party has factions and leaders must accommodate them.”

His presidency was marked by strengthened institutions through quality appointments and opened doors for Ghana on the global stage. However, Kennedy suggests that Kufuor’s post-presidency may be his most impactful period.

Since leaving office, President Kufuor has maintained a dignified and statesmanlike presence, establishing a foundation and playing a key role in the formation of APIMI. Last September, at a forum, he explained that “public interest digital media combined with AI will bring Africa to the centre of global development.”

Kennedy believes that alongside former President Mahama, Kufuor can empower the current and future generations to maintain Ghana’s position as a leading nation in Africa. He playfully urges the former President to be more vocal, referencing the popular song “Di wo hene” and adding a lighthearted note about avoiding a proposal from Delay.

Concluding with well wishes, Kennedy prays for many more years of joy and good health for President Kufuor.
