7.5‑Magnitude Quake Injures Dozens in Northern Japan

International

At least thirty people were injured when a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck north‑eastern Japan on Monday night, prompting the evacuation of roughly ninety thousand residents.

The tremor hit at 23:15 local time (14:15 GMT) at a depth of fifty kilometres, about eighty kilometres off Aomori’s coast, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported.

Tsunami warnings were issued but later lifted after waves of seventy centimetres were recorded. Train services along the north‑eastern line have been suspended and around two thousand seven hundred homes lost power.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged citizens to “reconfirm your daily earthquake preparedness, such as securing furniture, and prepare to evacuate immediately if you feel shaking,” according to a press briefing.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said a response office has been set up within the prime minister’s crisis‑management centre and an emergency team convened to assess damage and coordinate rescue efforts.

Tochoku Electric Power confirmed no irregularities at its Higashidori and Onagawa nuclear plants, and authorities told the International Atomic Energy Agency that the disabled Fukushima site also showed no signs of damage.

Japan sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and experiences roughly fifteen hundred quakes a year. Earlier this year, experts warned of a sixty‑to‑ninety percent chance of a megaquake in the Nankai Trough within thirty years, a scenario that could cost trillions of dollars and claim hundreds of thousands of lives.

Ghanaians with family or business ties in Japan are advised to stay updated via their embassies, while the Ghana Meteorological Agency continues to monitor global seismic activity to inform local preparedness programmes.

Authorities have warned that a stronger aftershock could occur in the coming days, urging the public to remain on high alert for at least a week, local media reported.
