Tamale – A 49-member team from the IGP’s Special Operations Unit has arrested 17 individuals suspected of engaging in drug peddling during a swoop at the Waterworks area in Tamale, a known hotspot for criminal activity.
The operation, conducted on December 13, 2025, also led to the recovery of significant quantities of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp, eight bottles of Koffex cough syrup, two sachets containing suspected opioid tablets, and a motorbike.
According to ASP Alhaji Bawah Jalil, leader of the operation, the team acted on intelligence to conduct the raid. He stated that the suspects are currently detained at the Sakasaka Police Station, awaiting further investigation.
“The exhibits have been handed over to investigators for thorough screening and forensic analysis,” ASP Jalil confirmed in a statement.
This latest operation follows a series of sustained efforts by the team in recent weeks, which have also included the successful rescue of a kidnapped individual. Authorities say the increased police presence aims to curb illicit activities and bolster public confidence.
The operation wasn’t limited to Tamale; intensified patrols and searches were also carried out in Kasalgu. Crucially, the team engaged with traditional authorities, paying courtesy calls on the Chiefs of Tolon and Nyankpala.
“The Chiefs welcomed our team and pledged their full support,” ASP Bawah Jalil explained. “They expressed serious concern about the growing drug abuse problem among the youth and emphasized the need for continuous operations to restore peace and order to the communities.”
The IGP Special Operations Team has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining such operations to ensure lasting peace, security, and public trust throughout the Northern Region. Authorities are urging residents to cooperate with the police by providing information on suspected criminal activities.
