Ghana’s infectious Highlife music is set to take centre stage as the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) launches a year-long celebration of its 100th anniversary. The landmark event will honour the genre’s rich history and global impact.
The GTA, working with stakeholders in the creative and cultural sectors, announced the launch, emphasizing Highlife’s status as more than just music – it’s a national treasure, a key part of Ghanaian identity, and a sound that resonates throughout the African diaspora.
The official launch is scheduled for Friday, December 19, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the prestigious La Palm Royal Beach Resort in Accra.
The year-long commemoration will trace the incredible journey of Highlife, celebrating the musicians who pioneered the genre and showcasing its enduring influence on African and global music. “Highlife is not just a genre; it’s a story of Ghana, a reflection of our cultural evolution,” a GTA spokesperson reportedly stated.
The launch event is expected to draw a large crowd, including Highlife veterans, contemporary artists, industry leaders, policymakers, and fans. It is also a key component of the ‘December in GH’ initiative, aimed at boosting Ghana’s creative economy and promoting cultural tourism.
Media representatives have been invited to cover the event and share the stories of those dedicated to preserving and promoting Ghana’s musical heritage. The GTA is encouraging all Ghanaians, and music lovers worldwide, to participate in this celebration of a century of rhythm, heritage and national pride.
The celebration promises a diverse range of activities throughout the year, further details of which will be unveiled at the official launch. It aims to re-establish Highlife as a driving force in Ghana’s cultural landscape.
