The Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) has begun a nationwide training initiative for caterers and head cooks, aiming to enhance the quality, safety, and nutritional value of meals provided to schoolchildren across the country.

The programme, a collaborative effort with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Women in Agricultural Development (WIAD) Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, is being rolled out across all 16 regions. It commenced on December 15, 2025, and is currently underway in the Bono, Volta, and Oti regions.

According to GSFP officials, the training focuses on practical, hands-on skills in nutrition, hygiene, and food safety. “Improving the capacity of caterers is critical to achieving the programme’s objectives,” a GSFP spokesperson stated. “School feeding plays a key role in boosting school enrolment, retention, and nutrition outcomes nationwide.”

To ensure comprehensive coverage, the country has been divided into Southern, Middle, and Northern zones, with training sessions being held at 82 designated centres. The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen the overall service delivery of the School Feeding Programme and protect the health of pupils.

The GSFP emphasized the importance of consistent delivery of safe and nutritious meals. The programme aims to equip caterers with the best practices in meal preparation, ensuring schoolchildren receive healthy and balanced diets. Further regions are expected to participate according to a pre-determined schedule.

This training is expected to have a positive impact on the well-being of students and contribute to improved educational outcomes. Officials are confident that the programme will address concerns regarding meal quality and safety in beneficiary schools.
