Accra, Ghana – In a move set to ease the financial burden on daily commuters, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a significant 15% reduction in transport fares, effective Saturday, May 25, 2025. The decision, confirmed by Public Relations Officer Abbas Ibrahim Moro, comes after productive discussions with the Minister of Transport and is primarily driven by the recent decrease in fuel prices. For passengers relying on trotros and buses, this fare reduction promises some welcome savings. The GPRTU hopes that this reduction will greatly benefit passengers.

The announcement follows an 18% drop in fuel prices, a development that prompted the Union to re-evaluate current fare structures. Historically, the GPRTU has adjusted fares based on one-third of fuel price fluctuations. However, recognizing the economic pressures faced by many Ghanaians, the Union opted for a more substantial cut this time around.

“We normally use one-third of the fuel price reduction to adjust fares, but we opted for 15% this time to reflect the fuel price trend and to ease the burden on our passengers,” explained Abbas Ibrahim Moro in an interview with 3news. This decision highlights the GPRTU’s willingness to go beyond its standard operating procedures to provide tangible relief to the public.

For the average passenger, the 15% fare reduction translates into immediate savings on daily commutes. Whether you’re traveling by trotro, bus, or potentially even taxis affiliated with the Union, you can expect to pay less starting May 25th. The exact amount saved will depend on your regular routes and modes of transport. Passengers should expect fares to reflect the GPRTU-mandated reduction.

Beyond the immediate impact on passengers, the GPRTU is also advocating for a broader ripple effect throughout the transport industry. The Union has expressed hope that spare parts dealers will also consider reducing their prices, which would further lower operational costs for transport operators. Import costs, exchange rates, and market demand are key factors influencing spare parts pricing, and it remains to be seen whether these factors will align to facilitate price reductions.

The GPRTU has made it clear that compliance with the new fare structure is mandatory for all its members. Any member found refusing to implement the 15% fare cut will face consequences, according to the Union’s leadership. To ensure adherence to the new fares, the GPRTU will likely implement monitoring mechanisms, and passengers are encouraged to report any instances of non-compliance.

“If your Union has decided, you have no option but to comply,” emphasized Abbas Ibrahim Moro, underscoring the seriousness with which the GPRTU is approaching this issue. The GPRTU is serious about compliance with the new measures.

In conclusion, the GPRTU’s 15% fare reduction represents a positive step towards alleviating the financial strain on Ghanaian commuters. By linking the reduction to the recent drop in fuel prices, the Union has demonstrated its responsiveness to market dynamics and the needs of the public. While the potential impact on spare parts pricing remains uncertain, the GPRTU’s commitment to enforcing the new fares ensures that passengers will directly benefit from these reduced costs. As May 25, 2025, approaches, passengers are encouraged to stay informed and report any discrepancies to help ensure a fair and transparent transport system. The GPRTU urges passengers to keep an eye out for the new fares.
