The government has donated approximately 22,000 sanitary pads to public schools within the Ledzokuku Municipality in the Greater Accra Region.
The initiative aims to support girls in basic, Senior High, and technical/vocational institutions who have begun menstruating, ensuring they have access to essential hygiene products.
A total of 8,900 pads were distributed to the municipality’s three second-cycle institutions, with the remaining 13,100 allocated to public basic schools.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony on Tuesday, Ledzokuku Member of Parliament, Benjamin Ayiku Narteh, emphasized the government’s commitment to youth development. “The government is ready to provide initiatives that promote the development of the youth,” he stated.
He further explained that prioritizing the growth and well-being of young people is central to the government’s agenda, assuring continued support for national development. The MP also cautioned the students against reselling the pads, urging them to utilize the supplies for their intended purpose.
In an address delivered by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mrs Rhodaline Adwoa Konduah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Israel Adjetey Otchwenmah, affirmed the assembly’s dedication to supporting community growth without discrimination. “The assembly will continue to provide the needed support for communities in the municipality so that the people would feel safe and happy to continue with their day-to-day businesses,” the address read.
Mrs Theresa Tetteh, the Municipal Director of Education for Ledzokuku, expressed gratitude for the donation and pledged its equitable distribution to deserving students. “The pads will go a long way to support the girls to be punctual in school, irrespective of the season or time,” she said optimistically.
This distribution fulfills a key campaign promise made by the government, addressing the issue of school absenteeism among girls due to menstruation. The initiative seeks to improve enrolment rates and ensure girls can complete their education without interruption.
The lack of access to sanitary products has been identified as a significant barrier to education for girls across the country, leading to missed school days and hindering their academic progress. This donation is a step towards mitigating these challenges and fostering a more inclusive learning environment.
