Government is set to launch a centralised national health intelligence database to boost transparency and evidence-based decision-making within Ghana’s healthcare system.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh revealed this at the second edition of the World Health Expo Leaders forum held at the Kempinski Hotel on December 9. He underscored the pivotal role of digital innovation in reshaping Ghana’s health sector.
“At this stage of our development, digital innovation has become the driving force behind our transformation,” Minister Akandoh stated. “We are building a centralised national health intelligence database that will allow for real-time data analytics, greater transparency, and truly evidence-based decision-making at every level of the health system.”
The Minister explained that a national layer is currently under development, designed to integrate all existing digital health platforms. “This ensures controllability, national ownership of all data generated, and the ability to use that data to improve the lives of our people,” he said.
According to the Minister, this digital shift will strengthen governance, improve operational efficiency, and make the health system more responsive to the needs of Ghanaian citizens.
“It is enabling us to track diseases faster, allocate resources more efficiently, and hold ourselves accountable to higher standards of performance and transparency,” he added.
Minister Akandoh emphasized that digital transformation is not merely an addition to ongoing reforms, but rather “the backbone of a modern, sovereign, and people-centred health system.”
