GhIE Promotes Competence in National Infrastructure Projects

A total of 183 engineers were inducted into the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) on December 16, 2025, with a strong charge to prioritize competence, responsibility, and integrity in their practice.

GhIE President, Ing. Ludwig Annang Hesse, reminded the new members during the 47th Induction Ceremony in Accra, that their oath signifies a commitment to serving both God and country, with the wellbeing of society as paramount.

“Engineering decisions directly impact public safety, national development, and the wise use of our limited resources,” Ing. Hesse stated. “It is therefore vital that the highest levels of professionalism and ethical conduct guide your work.”

The ceremony celebrated not only the induction of new members but also recognized outstanding engineers. Ing. Clara Mintah Ofosu (Chemical/Mining), Ing. Godfred Addai (Civil), Ing. Selorm Kwame Tsikata (Electrical/Electronic), and Ing. James Afful (Mechanical) were all honoured for their excellence.

Ing. Hesse also used the occasion to call on the Government to adhere to due process, particularly the Public Financial Management (Public Investment Management) Regulations, 2020 (LI 2411), in its infrastructure “reset agenda.”

He warned against shortcuts in infrastructure projects, emphasizing that compromising on any stage – from pre-feasibility studies to maintenance – would inevitably lead to cost overruns, poor quality, and ultimately, abandoned projects. “Cutting corners at any stage inevitably leads to cost overruns, substandard outcomes, and abandoned projects,” he cautioned.

To ensure robust project planning, Ing. Hesse urged the Ministry of Finance to allocate funds for thorough feasibility studies by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). He stressed that only projects demonstrating feasibility should be included in the Public Investment Plan.

“No public investment project should be admitted into the Public Investment Plan unless it has successfully passed the feasibility threshold,” he reiterated, adding that sufficient time and resources must be dedicated to preliminary designs to accurately define project scope and costs.

Ing. Dr. Michael Ankamah Bekoe, Chairperson of the GhIE Membership Committee, encouraged the inductees to embrace continuous professional development and active participation within the Institution. “Bear the title ‘Ing.’ with pride, dignity, humility, and a strong sense of professional responsibility,” he advised.

The collective voice of GhIE leadership – including Executive Director Ing. Dr. Enyonam Kpekpena, Immediate Past President Ing. Kwabena Bempong, and President-elect Ing. Sophia Abena Tijani – underscored the importance of public safety, sustainability, and ethical practice in all engineering endeavors.

Ing. Tijani added, “The Institution looks forward to your active participation, your innovative ideas, and the impact you will make in your respective fields. May you carry the title ‘Ing.’ with pride and a lifelong commitment to excellence. Congratulations, and I wish you a fulfilling and distinguished professional journey.”
