Daddy Lumba Court Case: Pay GH2m or Funeral Proceeds Saturday
The Accra High Court has ordered parties in the ongoing dispute over the burial of highlife legend Daddy Lumba to deposit GH₵2 million by 2:00 pm today, or risk the funeral proceeding as originally planned tomorrow.
The directive was issued during a hearing where the court summoned lawyers representing all parties. The court explained that the funds are to cover any costs incurred should the funeral arrangements be altered following the dispute.
This ruling follows an earlier injunction granted by the same court, restraining family head Kofi Owusu, known as Abusuapanyin, from organizing the funeral. Transitions Funeral Home was also barred from releasing Daddy Lumba’s remains.
The initial injunction stemmed from disagreements between the late musician’s maternal relatives and the family head concerning the leadership of the funeral planning and the management of related funds. The court had previously stressed the importance of consulting with the immediate family, aligning with Akan customary practices.
The court directed the first respondent to convene a stakeholder meeting within three weeks to collaboratively set a revised burial date. By attaching the GH₵2 million condition, the High Court seeks to balance legal processes with the desire to honour the legendary musician, while also safeguarding against potential financial losses if the funeral is called off.
Daddy Lumba, aged 60, passed away on July 26, 2025. He is widely regarded as a pivotal figure in Ghana’s music industry. Public attention remains firmly focused on both his enduring legacy and the ongoing family disagreements surrounding his final farewell.
