Swim Team Heads to Luanda for 2025 African Youth Games

Ghana’s national youth swimming team has departed Accra for Luanda, Angola, to participate in the 4th African Youth Games, scheduled to run from December 10–20, 2025.

The four-member squad comprises Kelvin Abdallah, Mercedes Abdallah, Oduma Agyei, and Tamba Akin Boamah. They are accompanied by head coach Jonathan Amoako-Atta and team leader Charles Mensah.

The prestigious continental event will be hosted across six Angolan cities – Luanda, Benguela, Lubango, Huambo, Moçâmedes, and Caxito. The swimming competition is slated for December 11–16 in Luanda.

Oduma Agyei will be competing in the girls’ division, focusing on the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, and 100m freestyle events. Mercedes Abdallah has a more extensive schedule, set to participate in the 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, and the challenging 200m individual medley.

The boys’ team will see Tamba Akin Boamah taking to the pool in seven events: the 100m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 200m breaststroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, and 200m IM. Kelvin Abdallah will contest the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle, and 100m butterfly.

The African Youth Games is a multi-sport event welcoming athletes aged 14–17 from across the continent, with competitions spanning 33 disciplines. Ghana is hoping to make a significant impact in the swimming pool, showcasing the talents of its young athletes.

“We’ve been preparing the team rigorously for this competition,” said Coach Amoako-Atta, speaking before departure. “They are all in good spirits and ready to give their best representation for Ghana.”

Team leader Charles Mensah added, “We are confident that our swimmers will perform well and bring glory to the nation. The support from the Ghana Swimming Federation has been invaluable.”
