The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Eastern Region has initiated a legal action to recover over GH₵32 million in unpaid bills from long-term defaulters. The company says the outstanding debt is hindering its ability to operate effectively and improve water service delivery.

As part of the first phase of this recovery drive, GWL has summoned fifteen customers to appear in court in the coming days.

According to the company’s legal team, more customers will be added to the list as the campaign progresses. The focus will be on those who have repeatedly ignored payment reminders, accumulated significant arrears, or refused to settle their bills even after disconnection.

The legal action also targets individuals and businesses that are utilizing alternative water sources like boreholes and wells without first clearing their outstanding debts with GWL.

Ing. Paul C Akpanya, Regional Chief Manager, emphasized the company’s determination: “We will go the extra mile within the remit of the law to recover every arrear owed the company. This is essential for sustaining our operations and improving service delivery to the public,” he stated.

The initial cases filed by GWL involve a mix of commercial and residential customers, including Jilcom Suhum roundabout Shell Station, Petroleum and Construction Ltd, Constance Baafi, Ebenezer Larbi Opare, Yomboi EA Adu, Dora James Okyere, KAMA Group of Companies Regional Director of Health, Paulina Donkor, Richard Boadu, Felicia Okyere Darko, F A Mpare, Taylor Posiah and Oduro, Patrick Ernest Obeng, and Kwame.

GWL has reiterated that recovering these debts is vital for maintaining operations, expanding infrastructure, and ensuring a consistent water supply throughout the Eastern Region.

The company is urging all customers with outstanding balances to visit their nearest district office or utilize the available electronic payment channels to settle their debts promptly.
