Ghana Police Investigate American Woman's Kidnapping Claim

Local News

The Ghana Police Service is investigating claims by an American woman, Arianna Naomi Mackey, that she was kidnapped and robbed in Accra by individuals she alleges were police officers.

According to a statement from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Ms Mackey, in a now-deleted viral video recorded at a hotel in Accra, alleged that five masked men, purportedly officers on snap-check duty, abducted and robbed her.

Police investigations have revealed that Ms Mackey and two companions checked out of their hotel on December 5, 2025, and airport records confirm her departure from the country on the same day.

The CID stated that investigators contacted Ms Mackey for further information, but she indicated she was no longer in Ghana and unable to provide the names of the alleged officers or the vehicle’s number plate. “She indicated to Police that she was out of the country and she could not get the names of the alleged officers nor the number plate of the vehicle they were using,” the statement read.

Attempts to involve a friend who accompanied Ms Mackey during her stay in Ghana have also hit a snag, as the friend has expressed unwillingness to participate in the investigation.

The statement, signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the CID, noted that Ms Mackey has deleted the video and has since blocked attempts by investigators to reach her via WhatsApp calls and messages.

Despite these challenges, the Police Service says it is actively pursuing diplomatic channels to secure Ms Mackey’s cooperation. “The Service emphasised that it takes the allegations seriously, stating it remains committed to uncovering the facts in this case,” the CID statement concluded.
