Ghana will be represented at the cutting-edge Games of the Future in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, later this month with its first-ever national phygital basketball team.

The four-player squad and accompanying three officials are poised to compete from December 17th to 24th, joining over 100 countries and an anticipated 2,000 spectators at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

The innovative discipline, “Phygital Basketball. 3on3 FreeStyle,” uniquely blends esports and traditional athletics. Teams of two will battle it out in a two-stage format – a digital showdown on “3on3 FreeStyle: Rebound” and a physical 2-on-2 game on a standard 3×3 court. Scores transition from the virtual to the real, with the combined total determining the victor, and a substantial $400,000 prize pool awaits.

This competition demands participants be adept in both digital strategy and physical prowess, truly testing a new generation of athletes. According to Ghana Esports Federation (GESF) President Mr. Igor Boumekpo, “This is a historic moment for Ghana, showcasing our commitment to embracing the future of sports.” He further noted Ghana is one of only two African nations participating in the phygital basketball event this year.

The team’s preparation has received robust support from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and the National Sports Authority, providing essential funding and diplomatic assistance to ensure a smooth and well-equipped participation. The GESF’s collaboration with the World Phygital Community has also been instrumental in strengthening Ghana’s position within this burgeoning sporting landscape.

Ghana is set to face off against the USA in their inaugural match, competing amongst a field of sixteen teams. The nation is keenly watching as its representatives venture into this exciting and novel sporting arena.
