Accra, Ghana is preparing to host the 2025 ADEA Triennale on Education and Training, a pivotal gathering aimed at accelerating the fight against learning poverty across the African continent. The Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), in partnership with the Ghanaian government, is organizing this high-profile event, expecting to draw over 1,000 participants dedicated to strategizing and implementing transformative changes in education systems. Scheduled for October 29-31, 2025, the Triennale in Accra seeks to bolster the resilience of Africa’s education sector and make significant strides toward eradicating learning poverty by 2035. The selection of Ghana underscores the nation’s increasing prominence in shaping the future of education in Africa, offering a platform to showcase innovative reforms and cultivate collaborative efforts. This conference is especially important to addressing learning poverty and improving education quality.

Ghana’s selection to host the 2025 ADEA Triennale reflects a strong vote of confidence in its commitment to education reform. According to the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, this decision signifies a recognition of Ghana’s leadership in pioneering educational advancements. Hosting the Triennale provides a unique stage to exhibit the country’s transformative education initiatives and to foster knowledge exchange with other African nations, building crucial partnerships to enhance education systems continent-wide.

“Hosting the Triennale offers a unique platform to highlight Ghana’s transformative education reforms, learn from our peers across the continent, and forge bold partnerships to uplift education systems across Africa,” stated Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu.

The 2025 ADEA Triennale is centered around the theme of “Strengthening the resilience of Africa’s educational systems advancing towards ending learning poverty by 2035 with a well-educated and skilled workforce for the continent and beyond.” It will facilitate a crucial policy dialogue focused on reshaping education systems to prioritize quality, equity, and relevance. The primary objective is to identify actionable strategies that will improve educational outcomes and cultivate a skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of Africa’s evolving future. The event anticipates participation from over 1,000 individuals, including ministers of education, senior government officials, education experts, private sector leaders, and key development partners, both in person and virtually.

The discussions at the Triennale will delve into seven critical sub-themes essential for advancing education across Africa. These include reimagining education financing, exploring sustainable funding models to bolster educational initiatives, and improving foundational learning, with a focus on early childhood education and strengthening basic literacy and numeracy skills. Also on the agenda is advancing technical and higher education, enhancing vocational training to meet the needs of the modern workforce, and strengthening teacher development, investing in training and professional growth to elevate teaching quality. Leveraging technology and data will also be explored, as they can enhance learning outcomes and streamline education management. All of these points will lead to better outcomes for students and reduce learning poverty.

The 2025 Triennale will serve as a stocktaking platform, assessing the progress made since the 2022 edition held in Mauritius, as well as the outcomes of the 2024 Year of Education for Africa. This event is strategically aligned with the African Union’s Decade of Accelerated Education (2025–2034), demonstrating a unified and cohesive approach to education reform. ADEA’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Albert Nsengiyumva, emphasized the critical need to enhance system resilience, strengthen peer learning, and accelerate the implementation of proven solutions to combat the challenges facing education in Africa.

“In an era of unprecedented challenges—from learning poverty and shifting labour market demands to declining education financing—we must enhance system resilience, strengthen peer learning, and accelerate the implementation of proven solutions,” said ADEA Executive Secretary, Mr Albert Nsengiyumva.

Ghana’s hosting of the 2025 ADEA Triennale signifies a pivotal step forward in the collective effort to eradicate learning poverty and cultivate a highly skilled workforce throughout Africa. The event is poised to catalyze transformative education reforms, fostering collaboration and innovation across the continent. By tackling key challenges and aligning with overarching continental objectives, the Triennale is set to make substantial contributions to strengthening the resilience of Africa’s educational systems, thereby securing a brighter and more prosperous future for its young people.
