The world of Ghanaian football mourns the loss of a true icon, Wilberforce Kwadwo Mfum, affectionately known as ‘The Bulldozer.’ At 88, Mfum leaves behind a legacy of passion, skill, and dedication that has indelibly shaped the sport in Ghana. His passing serves as a moment to reflect not only on his remarkable career with Kumasi Asante Kotoko and the Black Stars, but also to address misunderstandings surrounding the May 9 Foundation, an organization of importance to him and many others. Mfum, a powerful presence on and off the field, was a name synonymous with Ghanaian football excellence.

Wilberforce Kwadwo Mfum’s impact on Ghanaian football earned him the moniker ‘The Bulldozer,’ a testament to his strength and determination on the field. His journey began with Swedru All Blacks, marking the start of a career that would see him become a household name.

Before gracing the pitch for Asante Kotoko, Mfum honed his skills with Cape Coast Vipers and Kumasi Great Ashanti. However, it was his time with Kotoko that cemented his place in football history. The sixties witnessed Kumasi Asante Kotoko rising to prominence, largely thanks to the contributions of players like Mfum.

Mfum starred in Kotoko’s first Champions League Cup final against Englebert of Congo Republic. The match’s unfortunate conclusion – a loss decided by a coin toss – is a painful memory for fans, but Mfum’s performance remains a highlight.

As a regular player for the Black Stars, Mfum made his mark on the international stage, a significant goal against Tunisia at Accra Stadium in 1968 standing out. Despite serving as captain in 1965, injury prevented him from participating in the Africa Cup of Nations that year; Addo Odametey subsequently led the team to victory.

Sports Director Ohene Djan described Mfum as “a powerful individualist with a lethal shot in the right foot. A fearless minesweeper and initiator of all onslaughts.” These words capture his determination and versatility on the field, characteristics that made him a formidable opponent.

The synergy between Mfum and Osei Kofi was a joy to watch. Osei Kofi’s dribbling skills complemented Mfum’s finishing abilities, creating a dynamic partnership that terrorized defenses.

Mfum also played professionally in the USA, broadening his horizons and experiences within the sport. After retiring from active football, he returned to Asante Kotoko, serving as a board member and continuing to contribute to the club he loved.

Even after retirement, Mfum’s passion for football never waned. His enthusiasm for the rivalry between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko remained strong, viewing it as Ghana’s equivalent of the Spanish El Classico. He often referenced the memorable 4-3 match in 1983, showcasing his deep connection to the game’s history.

While ‘Bulldozer’ was his primary nickname, comparisons have been drawn to other players with powerful monikers, such as Agyeman Badu’s ‘Soccer Articulator’ and the modern ‘Excavator,’ highlighting the enduring appreciation for strong, impactful players.

In remembering Mfum, it is also important to address recent remarks made by Sports Minister Kofi Adams regarding the May 9 Foundation. It’s disappointing to hear the Minister question the Foundation’s credibility, especially considering its vital role in supporting dependents affected by the tragic events of May 9. The Foundation operated with audited records and provided extensive support, including education up to the university level. Furthermore, the Presidential Commission led by Samuel Okudzeto recommended the establishment of the National Ambulance Service and educational support for dependents, further highlighting the importance and legitimacy of the efforts made.

Wilberforce Kwadwo Mfum, ‘The Bulldozer,’ leaves an enduring legacy. His contributions to Asante Kotoko and the Black Stars will never be forgotten. It is equally important to ensure that the record is set straight regarding the May 9 Foundation and its achievements. Rest in peace, Kwadwo Mfum. Your contributions will always be remembered.
