Ghana Deports Israelis After Unjustified Ghanaian Deportation

The government of Ghana has deported three Israeli nationals in response to the ill-treatment and deportation of Ghanaian citizens by Israeli authorities, a move aimed at protecting the dignity of Ghanaians abroad.

A press statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on December 10, 2025, detailed the decision, stating it followed the unacceptable deportation of three Ghanaian nationals from Israel. Accra subsequently expelled three Israelis who had recently arrived in the country.

Announcing the decision, the Foreign Affairs Minister shared the statement on his Facebook page, opening with: “The government of Ghana has been compelled to activate appropriate reciprocal action by deporting three Israelis who arrived in Ghana earlier today following the ill-treatment and unwarranted deportation of three Ghanaians.” The statement further noted that both governments have reached an agreement for an amicable resolution.

The Charge d’Affaires ad interim at the Embassy of the State of Israel was summoned to the Foreign Affairs Ministry in the absence of the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, as both nations sought a peaceful resolution to the matter.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the dignity of Ghanaian citizens, emphasizing that all visitors to Ghana, particularly those from friendly nations, must be treated with respect. “The Government of Ghana will continue to safeguard the dignity of its nationals and also that of other nationals,” the statement read.

Ghana values its relationship with Israel and expects its citizens to receive the same level of dignity and respect when travelling there, as Ghana extends to visitors from Israel.

This retaliatory action stems from an incident on December 7, 2025, where several Ghanaian travellers were detained or deported upon arrival at Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport without clear justification. Four members of a Ghanaian parliamentary delegation, en route to a cybersecurity conference in Tel Aviv, were among those affected.

The remaining three individuals were denied entry and deported on the next available flight. The Foreign Affairs Ministry had previously described the actions of Israeli authorities as “inhumane and traumatic,” alleging that Ghanaian travellers were deliberately targeted.

By deporting the three Israelis, Ghana is signaling a firm, yet measured, response to any violations against its citizens. The government’s actions underscore a broader demand for reciprocal respect and fair treatment in international travel and diplomatic relations.

This development represents a significant test for Ghana-Israel relations. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
