The Government of Ghana has vehemently condemned the recent ill-treatment of its citizens at the Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel.
In a strongly worded statement, the government expressed deep concern over the deliberate targeting and inhumane detention of Ghanaian travellers since Sunday, December 7th. Seven Ghanaians were initially detained on that day without justifiable reason.
Four of those detained were members of a Parliamentary delegation attending the Annual International Cybersecurity Conference in Tel Aviv. They were held for over five hours before being released following extensive diplomatic intervention. The remaining three travellers were deported and have since returned to Ghana.
According to the statement, the government views the actions of Israeli authorities as unfairly targeting Ghanaians and has formally conveyed its strong reservations regarding the humiliating treatment of its nationals. Ghana and Israel have enjoyed over six decades of cordial relations and unimpeded travel for citizens of both countries.
The government also dismissed Israel’s justification for the deportations – alleging non-cooperation from the Ghanaian Embassy in Tel Aviv – as “totally untenable.” Officials emphasized that the embassy has consistently operated in full compliance with international law.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced it will summon officials from the Israeli Embassy in Accra to express Ghana’s profound displeasure. Furthermore, the government is actively considering appropriate reciprocal action in response to this incident.
