George Addo Jnr has been named Lead English Commentator for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by New World TV, the tournament’s official broadcast rights holders. This marks his second consecutive assignment in the role.
The experienced broadcaster, currently with BBC Sport and a former Editor at JoySports, previously served as Lead English Commentator at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire. There, he shared commentary duties with African football greats like Sébastien Bassong, Didier Drogba, Emmanuel Adebayor, Basile Boli, and Salomon Kalou.
Addo Jnr boasts an impressive international broadcasting career, having covered six AFCON tournaments, three FIFA World Cups – including the recent Qatar 2022 edition – two UEFA European Championships, five seasons of the UEFA Champions League, and numerous Ghana Premier League campaigns.
He etched his name in the history books at EURO 2020, providing nationwide free-to-air television commentary and calling the final clash between Italy and England live from Wembley Stadium to a global audience.
Beyond major tournament coverage, Addo Jnr regularly delivers match reports and insightful analysis for BBC’s Saturday Sports World, Sunday Sports World, Sports Today, and the World Service’s Newsday programme.
For the upcoming AFCON in Morocco, Addo will be joined by fellow Ghanaian commentator Atsrim Sitsofe Philip, a well-known face and voice on JoySports.
Sitsofe Philip’s extensive experience in football commentary and analysis is expected to add considerable depth and quality to the on-ground broadcast team, bolstering Ghana’s representation at the tournament. “I’m excited to work alongside George again at AFCON,” Sitsofe Philip stated, “and contribute to bringing the passion of African football to viewers across the continent and beyond.”
New World TV’s coverage will reach audiences in over 36 countries, with commentary available in six African languages throughout the tournament.
