INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

inclusive-education is seen as where exceptional children learn and interact together in the general classroom with their peers. It is also called integrated education.

CHARACTERISTICS OF INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

  1. By inclusive, students attend neighborhood schools with age and grade.
  2. Inclusive students receive in school, educational services in general with appropriate in-class support.
  3. There are regular teachers
  4. There are special teachers or education consultants.
  5. There are resources rooms
  6. The school environment is structured to meet the needs of all pupils

IMPORTANCE OF INCLUSIVE EDUCATION inclusive-education

  3. Inclusive education gives individuals with special needs the opportunity of meeting together and forming friendship across groups.
  4. It providers a rich and diverse environment for children to grow.
  5. It creates welcoming communication and building inclusive societies.
  6. It also reduces begging for alms on the street since this practice is common is segregated schools but not heard of in the integrated schools.

SEGREGATION EDUCATION 

The segregation model is a system of education in which children with special needs are placed in special classes or separate schools.

In other words, segregation education means moving the exceptional child to education services away from his home where the child stays for about three months or in some cases for years away from his home and parents.

The child is therefore out of the regular society in which he will live and work in future.

ADVANTAGES inclusive-education

  1. It allows for special teaching / learning materials such as Braille books, Braille machines, Braille paper, binding machines, thermophone machine etc to be used.
  2. The pupils learn the independent way of living eg. walking by themselves without a sighted person guiding them, washing their own clothes etc.
  3. The exceptional children are fed three times a day.
  4. Segregated children are given free education.
  5. The presence of other children with similar or worse eye condition serves as encouragement to the down hearted child who might have lost sight later in life.
  6. It allows for specialist teachers to provide professional teaching to the exceptional child.

DISADVANTAGES

inclusive-education ,The child, even at a very tender age of four years or less moves away from the joy and comfort of the home, parents and siblings.

  1. The pupils learn how to live in the world of the visually impaired. They may therefore, find it difficult to live peacefully with the sighted in the larger world.
  2. They also learn to live in an artificial environment in which the surroundings have been constructed to suit only the visually impaired. After school therefore they feel quite uncomfortable living among the sighted.
  3. The practice also encourages some parents to neglect their responsibilities towards their wards. For instance, some parents use such schools as dumping grounds for their special needs children whereby they refuse to pick their pupils when the schools vacate. Ghspeaks
  4. Segregated education promotes inconsistencies in the education of exceptional children. This means that when the child completes JHS, which is segregated, he goes to an integrated SHS. In Ghana, there is no senior high school, Teacher Training College or University which is segregated.
  5. In the segregated model pupils whose disabilities are mild have the problem getting worse because if a child has some amount of vision or hearing which can help him to study, once he is in segregated system, Braille or sign language is used thus making the situation worse.
