The air in Ga Mashie crackles with anticipation, but not all is harmonious. Fifteen churches, including well-known congregations like Calvary Baptist Church and Lighthouse Chapel, have been summoned by the Ga Mashie Traditional Council. The charge? Flouting the established noise ban, a directive intended to ensure peace and order during customary rites leading up to the Homowo Festival. The ban, which went into effect on May 12th, has ignited a debate about the intersection of religious expression and traditional customs in the community. At the heart of the matter is the delicate balance between the rights of worshippers and the preservation of cultural heritage, a tension that has now reached a critical point.

Asafoatse Mankatta, a key figure in the Ga Mashie Traditional Council, spoke with Adom News, outlining the council’s position. He emphasized that the directive is not intended to stifle religious expression but rather to maintain decorum during a sacred period. The council’s task force, under his leadership, is responsible for enforcing the month-long noise ban.

The ban restricts a range of activities. Clapping, a common practice in many church services, is strictly prohibited. The placement of loudspeakers outside church and mosque premises is forbidden, aiming to contain the sound within the confines of the buildings. Roadside evangelism, often characterized by amplified preaching and music, is also not allowed. Furthermore, the use of megaphones, loudspeakers, tambourines, and other musical instruments, both indoors and outdoors, is prohibited during the ban period.

The 15 churches were summoned due to alleged violations of these restrictions, primarily the act of clapping during services. The inclusion of prominent churches like Calvary Baptist Church and Lighthouse Chapel in the summons underscores the council’s seriousness. Adding to the complexity, some churches reportedly refused to accept the summons letters, a move that could further escalate tensions.

Asafoatse Mankatta expressed his disappointment, stating, “We have great respect for Calvary Baptist Church, but we were surprised to see them violating the orders of the Traditional Council; they were making noise as if there was nothing at stake.”

The consequences for non-compliance are significant. Church authorities are expected to appear before the Council on Thursday, May 22nd, to address the allegations. Asafoatse Mankatta has warned of “dire consequences” for those who fail to comply with the summons or continue to violate the ban. To ensure adherence, the task force will intensify enforcement efforts starting next Sunday.

However, some exceptions to the noise ban exist. Churches are permitted to sing during their services, allowing for a form of worship that does not involve percussive or amplified sounds. Additionally, churches with soundproof structures that effectively prevent noise from escaping their premises are exempt from the restrictions, recognizing that their activities do not disrupt the surrounding community.

Asafoatse Mankatta has appealed to the Christian community to respect and comply with the directives. He stressed that the ban is essential to ensure the smooth and respectful observance of customary rites associated with the Homowo Festival. The festival holds deep cultural significance for the Ga Mashie people, and the council believes that maintaining a peaceful environment is crucial during this time.

The current situation highlights the complex interplay between traditional customs and religious expression. The noise ban impacts the way some churches conduct their services and practice their faith. This has spurred conversations about finding resolutions that respect both religious freedom and cultural norms. It forces consideration of balance between traditional customs and religious expression and Consideration of balance between traditional customs and religious expression.

The Ga Mashie Traditional Council’s stance underscores the importance of respecting cultural traditions. While some forms of worship are permitted, compliance with the noise ban is seen as crucial for community harmony. This ongoing situation highlights the need for open dialogue and understanding between religious institutions and traditional authorities within the Ga Mashie community. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves regarding the noise ban.
