A consultant paediatrician has shared a heartwarming encounter with a young patient, revealing the surprising influence of football stars on children’s preferences, even when unwell.
The doctor, who writes anonymously for GhSpeaks.com, recounted how a three-year-old girl, brought in by her mother for a fever, cough, and runny nose, initially refused to engage during the consultation. “She was quiet, moody and did not make eye contact,” the doctor explained. “I used all my skills to draw her into the conversation, but she would not engage.”
After a cooperative examination, the doctor discovered the reason for the little girl’s unusual behaviour. “The mother said my little friend was annoyed because she did not want to go to the hospital. Her reason was that she wanted to go to school and watch ‘Messi and Ronaldo’,” the paediatrician shared, expressing initial confusion.
It turned out the school had cleverly used the names of the football icons for their inter-house competition teams. “Their school usually organises football games between students in the primary and upper classes, and they call the teams ‘Messi and Ronaldo’,” the mother clarified. The last day of school before the Christmas break, known as “Our Day”, featured a highly anticipated match.
When asked which player she preferred, the young patient enthusiastically declared, “RONALDO!!”
The doctor used the encounter to reflect on the powerful influence of celebrities on young children. “Children’s ability to imitate others’ actions is a powerful form of learning,” he stated. He noted that while parents and teachers are primary role models, children are increasingly drawn to the glamorous lives portrayed by celebrities.
However, the paediatrician also highlighted the potential for positive influence. “Many celebrities use their public profile to support charities… Many sports figures offer insight into their arduous journeys.” He specifically praised Cristiano Ronaldo as a positive role model, noting his dedication and lack of public scandal. “You will rarely hear of him being involved in any scandal. He continues to perform at the highest level and remains highly motivated.”
The doctor emphasized the importance of play for children’s development, observing that they instinctively gravitate towards it even in a clinical setting. He also cautioned parents against using the threat of injections as a means of discipline.
