The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced a renewed focus on public fire safety education, especially in market areas, following a devastating fire at the Cantoments Prison Service Barracks that left several traders in distress.

DOII Desmond Ackah, the Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, stated that the Service will intensify efforts to clamp down on traders who obstruct fire hydrants with unauthorized structures. He emphasized that such obstructions severely hamper the ability of firefighters to respond effectively to emergencies.

“We are urging all traders to prioritize fire safety and ensure that any electrical work within their shops is conducted by certified professionals,” DOII Ackah said. “Poor wiring continues to be a leading cause of fires in our markets across the country.”

The fire, which broke out around 2:00 am on Tuesday, rapidly engulfed approximately 11 shops at the barracks. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control, but not before substantial damage was incurred.

Auntie Abena, one of the affected traders, tearfully recounted her losses, stating she lost GH₵3000 in cash and vital sewing machines that were her source of livelihood. “Everything is gone,” she lamented.

Another trader described the incident as a crushing blow, explaining that years of hard work had been destroyed within hours. The incident has left many questioning the safety measures in place at the barracks.

The GNFS has reaffirmed its commitment to preventing future occurrences through continuous public education, strict enforcement of safety regulations, and collaborative efforts with traders and market authorities to mitigate fire risks and safeguard lives and property.
