Ghana Introduces VAT Reward Scheme

Politics

The Ministry of Finance is set to launch a National Value Added Tax (VAT) “Reward Scheme” next year, aiming to encourage taxpayers to comply with VAT regulations and ultimately boost revenue collection.

The announcement followed a meeting between Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and officials from the Large Taxpayer Office at the VAT House in Accra. During the engagement, Dr. Forson emphasized his dedication to strengthening the team’s efforts and eliminating challenges obstructing effective revenue mobilization.

Under the proposed scheme, compliant taxpayers who collect VAT receipts will be eligible to enter national draws with the chance to win various prizes. This initiative is anticipated to incentivize Ghanaians to actively request receipts when making purchases, thereby curbing leakages within the VAT system and improving overall revenue performance.

The VAT Reward Scheme is just one aspect of a comprehensive package of tax administration reforms planned for implementation next year. These reforms also include a revamped VAT system and the introduction of fiscal electronic devices designed to enhance compliance, transparency, and the accuracy of data.

“These combined reforms will help build a modern, fair, and efficient revenue system,” Dr. Ato Forson stated, adding that the improvements would support the government’s wider “agenda of Resetting for Growth, Jobs, and Economic Transformation.”

Officials hope the reward scheme will foster a greater sense of civic responsibility and contribute to a more robust tax collection system for the nation.
