Adelekezu Residents Riot Over Boy's Death, Destroy Mining Company Property

A boy has died after a shooting incident at a mining site in Adelekezu, near Dadwen in the Axim District of the Western Region. The Western Regional Police Command has launched investigations into the Saturday, December 13, 2025, incident, which also resulted in significant damage to company property.

Police responding to the scene discovered two 4×4 SUVs and two tipper trucks completely burnt. A pickup vehicle and a Toyota Land Cruiser also sustained damage during the unrest.

Preliminary investigations suggest a confrontation occurred between some youth from Adelekezu and private security personnel at the mining site. The youth had allegedly attempted to enter the company’s concession.

During the altercation, reports indicate the youth attempted to disarm a security guard, trying to seize his pump-action gun. The guard, resisting the attempt, reportedly fired a shot that tragically struck the boy.

The victim was quickly transported to the Axim Government Hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival. “We are deeply saddened by this loss of life,” a source close to the hospital stated, requesting anonymity.

The boy’s death ignited anger amongst local youth, who subsequently vandalized the mining site, setting equipment ablaze and reportedly threatening workers. Police intervened swiftly and successfully rescued eleven workers from the location.

Five suspects – Gyenyame Owusu, 38; Matthew Asamah, 24; Nana Yaw, 15; Yaw Opoku, 16; and Kojo Agyei, 21 – have been arrested and are in custody facing charges of causing harm and unlawful damage.

The Western Regional Police Command is appealing to residents to remain calm and fully cooperate with the ongoing investigations to ensure justice is served. They have assured the community that a thorough and impartial inquiry will be conducted.

More updates will be provided as investigations progress, and authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward.
