A farmer from Avega, in the Akatsi North District of the Volta Region, has died after being attacked by a swarm of bees on Saturday, December 13.
Akuvi Egbor, believed to be in her late 70s, was on her way to her farm at Kunyorwu, near Avega, when the incident occurred at approximately 1000 hours. An 82-year-old woman, Eya Xenyo, was also critically injured in the attack and is currently receiving treatment at St Anthony’s Hospital in Dzodze.
Cephas Weto, Deputy National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Coordinator for the area, narrated the tragedy to the Ghana News Agency (GNA). He stated that he received an alert from the Ghana National Fire Service and rushed to the scene.
“Upon arrival, we found the deceased had unfortunately passed away, and another resident was in critical condition,” Mr. Weto said.
According to Mr. Weto, the bees were disturbed by a machine operator reshaping the road network nearby. The swarm emerged from a baobab tree, seemingly triggered by the sound of the graders.
Residents had contacted the assembly requesting assistance in preparing the road for an upcoming funeral, leading to the roadwork. The bees reacted to the noise of the machinery, launching the attack.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue for further action.
NADMO officials are advising residents to be cautious when approaching areas with trees, especially during road construction or other activities that generate noise.
